The CCB Skydive Animation

Dr Toga wanted to have a LONI version of the famous "Powers of ten" CG movie. We stated with a movie from the NASA and tweaked the camera path to end just atop the UCLA south entrance.

The sources pictures

The sources were an original NASA animation, in HDTV 720p, a 6K picture from the nasa, a couple of 3K satelite pictures from globexplorer.com, and hundreds of aerial views of L.A. available at the USGS site.
I did generate a 1 feet resolution view of the campus, a 51 MegaPixels picture (8,718 by 5,919) plus a 4 feet resolution of the westwood area, who scores "only" 4136 by 2872 pixels, a mere 12 MegaPixels. You gat get that 51MP jpeg, for just 17MB.
The movie ends on a transition to another 720p CG movie, rendered by the UCLA Urban Simulation Team , and shows the 4 builidings housing labs of the CCB research group. It was intented to intitate an interactive walk-through using a VR model of our new building.

Compositing in After Effects

Synching coherent zooms of different views of the same object is a kind of nightmare. That's the reason why thee camera movement in that version is still a bit shaky. Smoothing the camera path and speed without interfering with the cross-fades sequences is extremely time-consuming, and should be solved, when we get an chance.

Have a look at the movie :
